The Kansas City Star

Positioning Statement:

Reaching over 4 million people through print and online in a month, The Star is the area's preeminent media company. Among the top 35 DMA's in size, The Star ranks fourth in penetration on Sunday and dailies (Newspapers First, 2007). The newspaper has been recognized time and time again from various organizations and societies such as The Society for News Design, 10 Awards of Excellence; Scripps Howard Foundation's National Journalism Award honored one of our business reporters; APSE Triple Crown has picked our sports department twice in the last four years; American Association of Sunday and Features Editors named our FYI section one of the Top 20 features sections; Society of American Travel Writers named us the Best Travel section in our region; and The Kansas Press Association honored the entire staff with 36 awards, including 14 first place finishes in 2007. The Kansas City Star, also honored with eight Pulitzer Prize and four Polk awards, has continued to soar because of its innovative methods of delivering news and commitment to its community.

The Star reaches multi-target market through its website, niche products and services offered. Kansascity.com is the number one local media website with more than three million unique visitors a month and more than 25 million page views a month. The Star's niche products include Kansas City Spaces magazine (upscale lifestyle), Ink magazine (young adults), KC Weddings magazine (bridal), Indulge (fashion) and Goin' to Kansas City (visitor's guide). The Star's targeted online products include websites for each niche product plus Mom2Mom, Primebuzz (political), KC Gardens, Judge's Opinion (editorial cartoons), Varsity Zone (high school sports) and user submitted content sites such as Press Release Central, Community Photos and Midwest Voices. Another endeavor The Star has taken is e-newsletters including The Weekly Blink which targets women. The Star continuously seeks out new approaches to serve all of its community and launches new products almost every year.

The Star's new press pavilion is 424,000 square feet, three stories tall and houses the new KBA Commander Presses that not only prints The Kansas City Star newspaper but doubles as a commercial printer for The Star to produce products for other area publishing houses and businesses. StarDirect is The Star's turnkey direct mail subsidiary that helps advertisers reach a target market, print, mail and track responses. StarInfo provides reprints, photographs and other information from past issues of The Kansas City Star and publishes a wide variety of books containing repurposed content from The Star. The Star participates and sponsors many community-based and charity events, but also produces the largest and longest running bridal show in the Midwest.

The Kansas City area is developing in many different ways including population, business and specifically bioscience. For over a century, The Star has adapted with each emergence, answered to the demands of its markets and grows stronger with each product and service offered. As the area's dominant media force, The Star will continue to deliver.
